Use Claude with Microsoft 365 without losing control

Connecting AI to work content is useful. Giving it permission to change things needs a clearer habit.

What changed

Anthropic's July 24, 2026 release notes say the Microsoft 365 connector now includes write tools. With write tools enabled, Claude can draft, send and organize email, manage calendar events, update mailbox settings, and create or update files in OneDrive and SharePoint.

Read and search tools still work as before. Anthropic notes that Teams remains read-only. Before members can use write tools, a Microsoft Entra administrator must consent to the updated permissions and an admin must enable the tools for the organization.

Try this

  1. Start with read and search tasks, such as finding a file or summarizing recent emails.
  2. Enable write tools only for a small group first.
  3. Ask Claude to draft changes before it sends, creates or updates anything.
  4. Review recipients, file locations, calendar dates and permissions before final action.

Make it easier

Use a draft-first rule for the first few weeks. People build trust faster when they can see what will change before anything is changed.

Check before relying on it

This depends on Claude plan, connector setup, Microsoft Entra consent, admin enablement and organizational policy. Write access should be tested with low-risk examples before team-wide rollout.
